Acupuncture and Chinese medicine
Acupuncture is an ancient form of medicine which has been used for thousands of years to promote the bodies own innate capacity to self heal.
It works by balancing the vital substances of the body, including:
- “Energy” (Qi)
- “Spirit” (Shen)
- “Blood” (Xue)
- “Body Fluids” (Jinye)
- “Life Force” (Jing)
It encourages a restoration of balance in the body by:
- Unblocking stagnant energy channels ‘meridians’.
- Nourishing and tonifying weak organ systems.
- Reducing excess from inflamed or overloaded organ systems.
- Re-establishing optimal communication and relationships between all the organ systems.
In Chinese Medicine we view the body as a whole entity, understanding that health and wellness is a very delicate balance of interchanging energies and fluids circulated throughout the entire body.
Well-being and optimal inner health stems from a finely balanced relationships between the organ systems.
Ben and Biao
Chinese Medicine treatment always focuses upon resolving both the deep underlying “root cause of imbalance” (Ben) and the “symptoms branching off from the imbalance” (Biao).
With this the body is able to heal fully and completely, enabling long term health to ensue.
Spirit of Our Organs
The organs are so much more than just a fleshy physical machine, they have their own spirit and greater role in the totality of the human bodies intricate internal empire.
The Heart is acknowledged as the emperor and empress of our inner being and along with pumping blood around our kingdom, it also houses our Shen, which is likened to our Spirit and our Consciousness. It is the seat of our intelligence, the fullness and or ill-health of our spirit can always be seen in the brightness and sparkle shining out from our eyes. The heart in Chinese Medicine also contributes to making blood in our body and creates a peaceful home for our spirit to rest at night when we sleep.
Chinese Medicine Diagnosis
Is a very intricate and exceptionally in depth observation of the inner and outer patterns unfolding within the body at any given time. The main tools for diagnosis in Chinese Medicine are explained in more detail below:
- Inspection – Observation of the face, skin, body, posture and tongue diagnosis. The tongue contains a detailed map to the internal organ systems and imbalances can be observed via the tongues colour, wetness, shape, size and other features.
- Auscultation – Listening to the sounds of the voice, including laughter, weeping, groaning, singing and sighing, all give vital pieces of diagnostic information about your current state of balance and potential constitutional strengths and or weaknesses. Chinese Diagnosis also utilises the sense of smell to determine very subtle body odours, along with potential odours coming from within the body and on the breath.
- Palpation – Uses touch upon specific meridian channels, the abdomen and the wrist pulses which give clear and concise information about the current state of balance of all the individual organ systems at any given time. Stress, pregnancy, excess phlegm, weakness, blood deficiency can all be simply observed upon the pulse.
- Inquiry – In extremely in depth set of questions covering absolutely all aspects of a persons mind, body and spiritual health and current state of balance. Sleep, bowel movements, pain, vision, hearing, diet, emotional well being and so on.
Treatment plans will always vary from person to person, depending on the depth of the root cause and severity of symptoms, chronic or acute presentation, and the patient’s willingness to heal and make the necessary lifestyle changes for a full recovery into optimal wellness.
A full Chinese Medicine diagnosis will give your practitioner a great idea of how many session you will require for a return to balance, along with what specific dietary and lifestyle shifts will potentiate your healing for the long term.
